In Trial and Adoption of Aftermarket Ink Jet Cartridges, Lyra examines the factors that influence the use of aftermarket cartridges, including rate of supplies consumption, printer brand, and applications used. A detailed description of the distribution channels for aftermarket cartridges is provided. Lyra's 2000 U.S. home printing survey of 500 consumers forms the basis of this report, with data from the 1998 and 1999 surveys highlighting the historical trends. One key finding shows a link between purchase incidence of aftermarket cartridges and printer brand from 1998 to 2000 among U.S. consumers. Higher percentages of aftermarket cartridge use by Lexmark printer owners were observed in both the 1999 and 2000 home printer surveys. In 1999, Lexmark struggled to meet demand for its ink jet cartridges; Lyra suspected that the cartridge shortage might have contributed significantly to the increase of Lexmark ink jet printer owners who purchased aftermarket products. This report offers fresh insight backed up by solid primary research and is a must-read for ink jet printer OEMs and suppliers of non-OEM ink jet solutions.
