Video-on-demand (VOD) enables consumers to watch a variety of premium content from the comfort of the couch, on their own schedules, without a trip to the video store. VOD dangles the prospect of increased revenue for cable-TV service providers and potentially threatens the established video-rental business. This report examines the results of an Internet survey of 350 users of cable-TV VOD services, exploring how and why they use the service, along with intriguing exploratory questions on the possible use of voluntary ad viewing in exchange for VOD credit.
One surprising finding of this study is that digital video recorder (DVR) users watch more VOD programs than non-DVR users, and these findings held true for both free and paid VOD (see figure). This consumer behavior challenges a widespread industry assumption that DVR and VOD technologies are competing for viewers' usage.
