Lyra's report Print Usage and Purchase Requirements among SMBs in the United States presents the results of a survey of 847 employees from small and medium-size businesses (SMBs) in the United States. The majority of the respondents are responsible for purchasing printers for their organization. The survey results are displayed in PowerPoint format, with easy-to-understand bulleted slides and more than 50 figures and charts.

The report provides readers with information about print applications and color usage; ink jet and laser printing technologies; printer purchase plans, including brand preferences; and supplies use and purchase plans among micro (1-9 employees), small (10-99 employees), and medium-size (100+ employees) businesses. It provides vendors with a thorough view of the current state of the U.S. SMB market.

One of the findings of the survey is that many U.S. SMBs are becoming more concerned about environmental issues. Thirty-five percent of SMBs indicated that environmental policies will have an effect on the amount of output they print (see figure).

The survey also uncovered a few methods that companies are employing in an effort to be greener.

  • SMBs use recycled paper. When asked about their use of specialty media, respondents ranked recycled paper the highest of all specialty media used, at 3.76 on a Likert scale of 1 to 5 (5 = very important and 1 = not important). Medium-size businesses rated recycled paper at 4.03.

  • About 66 percent of SMBs said they recycle printer cartridges, and only 12 percent said they throw away cartridges.

  • In terms of output and document-management features and functions, small businesses ranked duplex printing relatively low. However, the use of duplex printing increased according to business size. As more vendors add the duplex feature to lower-end devices, ratings for this feature will likely increase.
