Temporary Price Reduction: Was $595, Now $295. As cable-systems operators roll out residential telephone service, local telephone companies are responding with plans to launch their own television services to compete head-on with cable for triple-play services (video, voice telephony, and broadband Internet). With cable- and satellite-TV penetration at nearly 90 percent of U.S. households, the telcos will have an uphill battle wrestling away video customers. Based on findings from Lyra's DTV View survey of 1,000 adults from across the United States, this report investigates the prospective market for telco TV. Issues examined include the following:
- usage of television and advanced digital video services;
- existing cellular and landline telephony;
- broadband Internet access;
- interest in new features enabled by triple-play integration; and
- attitudes toward existing and potential television service providers.
