Over the last three years, desktop ink jet photo paper use has increased substantially, and Lyra forecasts that shipments will grow at a 13 percent compound annual growth rate from 2004 through 2009. Many consumers now consider ink jet photo paper a conventional paper, rather than a specialty paper. Lyra's surveys show that consumers' brand preferences have shifted significantly during the market's evolution. In particular, OEM brands are becoming increasingly popular with consumers. Lyra asked respondents who had purchased ink jet photo paper in the previous three months to select the brand of photo paper that they typically purchase. Kodak photo paper is the most popular brand, with almost one-third (32 percent) of respondents saying that they typically purchase Kodak-brand photo paper (see figure). HP-brand photo paper is a close second in terms of overall popularity (29 percent), while Epson photo paper is a more distant third (12 percent).
