Temporary Price Reduction: Was $2200, Now $1650. It is no surprise that printer and supplies vendors want to cash in on the booming Chinese economy. Over the last three years, China's economy-the second largest in the world-has expanded by more than 8 percent. While the hard copy hardware markets in the United States, Western Europe, and Japan are relatively mature, China is an emerging market. The Chinese market for laser printers and MFPs has grown rapidly in recent years. Lyra forecasts that revenue from laser printer and MFP sales in China will grow from $758 million in 2004 to $1.2 billion in 2008, a strong compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13 percent (see figure). Growth in the laser printer and MFP installed base in China will benefit the burgeoning toner cartridge market in China. Competition between OEM and aftermarket toner cartridge suppliers will be particularly fierce in China, as there are numerous aftermarket suppliers in China that currently produce cartridges for export. Aftermarket cartridge vendors' cost-savings message resonates with Chinese consumers, so printer OEMs will be challenged to create a marketing message that appeals to Chinese buyers.
