Description

Lyra forecasts a surge in ink jet photofinishing solutions at retail locations through 2012 as retailers transition from traditional minilabs to ink jet solutions. In 2008, ink jet photofinishing solutions emerged as a viable alternative for retail environments. Ink jet solutions promise print speeds, quality, and operating costs comparable to those of traditional silver-halide technology, along with lower capital costs, smaller footprints, little maintenance, and no toxic waste. These so-called "dry labs" have come at a perfect time, when many stores no longer have the photo volumes necessary to sustain a traditional minilab.

Much of the photofinishing industry, including hardware manufacturers, depends on consumables revenue. While only a fraction of a milliliter of ink is used to print a snapshot photo, the millions of prints potentially generated from retail ink jet devices amounts to significant ink volume. Lyra projects ink consumption among retail ink jet kiosks and microlab/minilabs will expand substantially from 2008 to 2012. Ink jet photofinishing will also consume an increasing volume of photo paper.

Retail Ink Jet Photo Supplies: Lyra Analysis and Spot Forecast provides ink jet photo hardware and supplies vendors with Lyra's outlook for both retail hardware and consumables volume and revenue through 2012. It also provides information on the portion of ink jet hardware versus traditional retail technologies.
